Wonderful Watercolors—Introducing our 2012 Artist-in-Residence

The Reserve at Lake Keowee Artist in Residence Russelll Jewell 2012The Reserve at Lake Keowee Community Foundation welcomes Russell Jewell, our 2012 Artist-in-Residence!

Watercolor artist Russell Jewell joins us at the lake this week (July 6–13) to share his talents with the community! His marvelous work is already on display at the Hill House Gallery and will be up through July 26. During his visit, Russell will be painting Plein Air throughout various locations within The Reserve. Interested participants can join in painting with Russell or come and watch him as he works. His Reserve-inspired work will be shown in various locations around The Reserve during the week and a finale reception will be held at the Hill House on Thursday, July 12th from 5–7 pm.

For more than twenty-seven years, he has carved a career out of the combining forces of art and education. Jewell’s qualifications for such a career include a Masters of Art from the University of South Carolina and a Doctorate of Education in Art from the University of Georgia. He is a certified Advanced Placement teacher and has received certification by the National Board for Professional Teachers.

Dr. Jewell’s educational awards include: Easley High School Teacher of the Year, Pickens County Teacher of the Year, and a Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholarship to Japan. His art awards include:

  • Winner of the River Place Plein Air Competition
  • SC Watermedia Society Awards: 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009
  • Georgia Watercolor Society Award Winner, 2010
  • Savoir Faire Merchandise Award with the National Watercolor Society, 2001
  • People’s Choice Award - Easels in Fredrick, 2012

Much of Jewell’s work reflects his travel experiences shared with his family, students and fellow  colleagues to such places as Amsterdam, Belgium, England, Italy, France, Costa Rica, Japan, and Canada. Some of Jewell’s favorite subject matter includes his wife Melissa and children, Nicholas and Anna Mackenzie. Most recently Jewell has enjoyed success as an East Coast Plein air painter. Plein Air Painting is a term that refers to painting outdoors on location.

About Kathryn Coleman-Gravely

Kathryn is originally from Asheville, NC and graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. After living in Tennessee for several years, she moved to Pickens County in 1985. Our director of The Reserve at Lake Keowee Community Foundation has been a part of our staff since 2004 when she worked with the Club as Membership and Special Events Coordinator. In 2007 Kathryn accepted the position of full time Foundation director. Kathryn is an avid hiker and history buff, as well as appreciative of the culture available here in Upstate, South Carolina. Her enthusiasm is translated into the many varied offerings provided by the Community Foundation that include environment, education, culture, and outreach.
