Last Friday, September 23, The Reserve at Lake Keowee was proud to host Clemson University’s largest annual fundraiser for its golf team – the 9th Annual Tiger Golf Gathering. The Tiger Golf Gathering is a weekend of fun events, beginning with a Pro-Am tournament on our award-winning Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and ending with a VIP Silent Auction Party on campus, that have helped fund a total renovation of the Clemson’s golf facilities, including a “second to none” practice area.

This year’s event was especially meaningful as the Clemson Golf Team and its supporters celebrated the grand opening of the course’s Larry B. Penley, Jr. Golf House, a 7,700 square feet, three-story “clubhouse” that will become the home for Clemson University’s golf team.

A total of 108 players participated from across the country. Among those in attendance at this year’s Gathering were Clemson golf alumni and 2009 U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover and PGA TOUR Professional Kyle Stanley.

A sudden-death playoff decided the PGA Tour’s Heritage event in Hilton Head on Sunday, capping off an exciting week in golf’s spotlight for the state of South Carolina. Earlier in the week, The Golf Channel’s Morning Drive show interviewed many of our state’s most recognizable personalities including University of South Carolina Head Football Coach Steve Spurrier and Clemson University Men’s Head Golf Coach Larry Penley.
“The Reserve at Lake Keowee is still my favorite upstate course.” Coach Steve Spurrier

When asked about his favorite courses in South Carolina, Coach Spurrier replied, “The Reserve at Lake Keowee is still my favorite upstate course.” Hosts Erik Kuselias and Gary Williams asked Coach Penley to name the one place he would take them if they visited the area and he replied, “I’m probably going to take you to The Reserve…awesome, awesome Jack Nicklaus golf course.

Thirteen-Year Cicadas will Emerge this Spring

13 year cicadas Lake Keowee Trail JournalOnce every thirteen years…
An unusually noisy little visitor emerges all around Upstate, South Carolina.  This spring – sometime in late April/early May – we will witness the emergence of the 13 year Cicadas!

Cicadas in our area can be divided into two groups according to when they occur; those that appear annually ( from the end of June to the middle of October) and those that appear periodically (every 13 or 17 years), from the middle of April to the middle of May. There is also a difference in their appearance. Annual cicadas vary in size from a ¼ of an inch to almost three inches in size. They tend to be black, brown, and green and have a green coloration along their wing margins. The periodical cicadas are generally all black with red eyes and orange wing margins and are generally an inch in length. Periodical and annual cicadas would rarely occur at the same time. Some annual species can begin “calling” or “singing” as early as mid-June here in the Mid-Atlantic, however most species tend to call as individuals and not the famous huge chorus that the periodicals are known for.

We are due for a major emergence this April, with as many as 40,000 Cicadas on a single tree!  However, entomologists at Clemson University say that there is no way to accurately predict if a large population will surface; we can only “wait and see.”

Video: Bags Fly Free to/from Greenville! Southwest Airlines service begins in Upstate South Carolina.

Crowds gathered at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) on Saturday to welcome Southwest Airlines to the Upstate. The inaugural flight from Dallas landed shortly after 3pm, piloted by Clemson University alumni Bert Godwin and John Lawton. Commercial service began Sunday including seven daily non-stop flights to/from Washington/Baltimore, Chicago, Houston, Orlando and Nashville.

“We were thrilled to learn that a low-cost, customer service-focused airline would fly directly from BWI into Greenville,” says Reserve Members and Maryland residents Janet and Leonard Nardone. “Now we can get to a town we love more easily and, best of all, bring the people we love with us! We plan to fly from BWI to GSP, enjoy a short, scenic drive to our home at The Reserve at Lake Keowee, and invite our friends and family along with us. The ease of an affordable, direct flight from our hometown to our favorite relaxation spot means more than I can say.”
