Last Friday, September 23, The Reserve at Lake Keowee was proud to host Clemson University’s largest annual fundraiser for its golf team – the 9th Annual Tiger Golf Gathering. The Tiger Golf Gathering is a weekend of fun events, beginning with a Pro-Am tournament on our award-winning Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and ending with a VIP Silent Auction Party on campus, that have helped fund a total renovation of the Clemson’s golf facilities, including a “second to none” practice area.

This year’s event was especially meaningful as the Clemson Golf Team and its supporters celebrated the grand opening of the course’s Larry B. Penley, Jr. Golf House, a 7,700 square feet, three-story “clubhouse” that will become the home for Clemson University’s golf team.

A total of 108 players participated from across the country. Among those in attendance at this year’s Gathering were Clemson golf alumni and 2009 U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover and PGA TOUR Professional Kyle Stanley.

Thirteen-Year Cicadas will Emerge this Spring

13 year cicadas Lake Keowee Trail JournalOnce every thirteen years…
An unusually noisy little visitor emerges all around Upstate, South Carolina.  This spring – sometime in late April/early May – we will witness the emergence of the 13 year Cicadas!

Cicadas in our area can be divided into two groups according to when they occur; those that appear annually ( from the end of June to the middle of October) and those that appear periodically (every 13 or 17 years), from the middle of April to the middle of May. There is also a difference in their appearance. Annual cicadas vary in size from a ¼ of an inch to almost three inches in size. They tend to be black, brown, and green and have a green coloration along their wing margins. The periodical cicadas are generally all black with red eyes and orange wing margins and are generally an inch in length. Periodical and annual cicadas would rarely occur at the same time. Some annual species can begin “calling” or “singing” as early as mid-June here in the Mid-Atlantic, however most species tend to call as individuals and not the famous huge chorus that the periodicals are known for.

We are due for a major emergence this April, with as many as 40,000 Cicadas on a single tree!  However, entomologists at Clemson University say that there is no way to accurately predict if a large population will surface; we can only “wait and see.”

Congratulations Katie Felton, Reserve Wellness Coordinator

Katie records the runners' time at the 2010 Apple-A-Day 5K

Congratulations to Katie for earning her CIFT from the American College of Sports Medicine!

Katie Felton encourages us to keep a healthy, active lifestyle as she oversees all wellness activities for The Reserve at Lake Keowee Club! But Katie isn’t just a motivator, she’s a trained professional. She holds her Masters Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Clemson University, and is a certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and Health and Fitness Specialist (HSF). Her latest accomplishment is earning her designation as an ACSM/NCPAD Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer, abbreviated as CIFT.

The two bodies that sponsor the certification are ACSM which is the American College of Sports Medicine (www.acsm.org) and NCPAD which is the National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (www.ncpad.org). The  CIFT is defined as a fitness professional capable of developing and implementing individualized exercise programs for persons who may have a physical, sensory or cognitive disability, who is healthy or has medical clearance to perform independent physical activity.

Katie Felton, The Reserve at Lake Keowee Wellness Coordinator

To sit for the CIFT exam you are required to hold a current NCCA-accredited health/fitness certification, CPR and AED certifications, have knowledge of exercise physiology as well as exercise testing and programming, knowledge in inclusive facility design and awareness of social inclusion for people with disabilities and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). You should also be able to demonstrate and lead safe, effective and adapted methods of exercise, write adapted exercise recommendations, understand adapted methods of exercise, and understand precautions and contraindications to exercise for people with disabilities and standards for accessible facility design.

This is a huge accomplishment for Katie, and an added benefit for Reserve Members who rely on her expertise and encouragement.
Great job, Katie!

Born Yesterday is a funny, heartwarming account of a seemingly dumb ex-chorus girl who finds herself pulled into the world of Washington and government big-wigs.  Judy Holliday won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Billie in The 1950 movie version of Born Yesterday, which was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Costume Design. It was also remade in 1993 starring Melanie Griffith, John Goodman and Don Johnson.

Congratulations, Dan!
