Teeing It Up for the Tigers

Last Friday, September 23, The Reserve at Lake Keowee was proud to host Clemson University’s largest annual fundraiser for its golf team – the 9th Annual Tiger Golf Gathering. The Tiger Golf Gathering is a weekend of fun events, beginning with a Pro-Am tournament on our award-winning Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and ending with a VIP Silent Auction Party on campus, that have helped fund a total renovation of the Clemson’s golf facilities, including a “second to none” practice area.

This year’s event was especially meaningful as the Clemson Golf Team and its supporters celebrated the grand opening of the course’s Larry B. Penley, Jr. Golf House, a 7,700 square feet, three-story “clubhouse” that will become the home for Clemson University’s golf team.

A total of 108 players participated from across the country. Among those in attendance at this year’s Gathering were Clemson golf alumni and 2009 U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover and PGA TOUR Professional Kyle Stanley.

Lake Keowee Golf - hole 18 Jack Nicklaus

When you think of great golf in South Carolina, you most likely conjure up an image of the coast.  Teeing up with an ocean breeze in your hair.  Beach vacations, and so on.  However, golfers everywhere – including the Golf Digest ratings team – are beginning to notice that the Upstate region of South Carolina has a lot to offer golfers, as well.  Upstate courses present an enticing change of pace that includes challenging topography, cooler temperatures, open water views of mountain lakes like Lake Keowee, and views of the Blue Ridge mountain range

Golf Digest Best in State - Top 100 Issue, May 2011Ranked as #21 in Golf Digest’s 2011 list of the ‘Best in State,’ the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course at The Reserve at Lake Keowee is a prime example of great South Carolina golf.  A Par 72, laying out at 7,112 yards, Jack Nicklaus takes note of the natural beauty preserved in his Lake Keowee project: “I really co-designed the course with Mother Nature—complementing the gorgeous, natural features already here. It was my job to find the course hidden in the hills along the lake.”

The 2011 USA Cycling Professional National Championships took place in Greenville over Memorial Day weekend. The road race came down to a photo finish after Matthew Busche edged local favorite George Hincapie by just one inch. Both riders tied with a time of 4:28.02, more than 16 minutes faster than last years winning time. The 115-mile road race course made four loops from the downtown area to Paris Mountain (elevation 2,054 ft) and back. Greenville, SC in partnership with Medalist Sports has hosted this championship for 6 consecutive years, and will welcome back the 2012 championship next year.
